Learn how to install and pair the Yale Z-Wave Plus Smart Module with your Assure Lock 2. Covers compatibility, step-by-step setup, and common pitfalls.

Quick answer

The Yale Z-Wave Plus Smart Module (AYR-MOD-ZW2-USA) adds Z-Wave connectivity to Assure Lock 2 models YRD450, YRD430, YRD420, and YRD410. Follow the steps below to install the module and pair it with your Z-Wave hub.

Why add a Z-Wave module?

If you already own an Assure Lock 2 and want remote access, smart home integration, or voice control, the Z-Wave Plus module is the upgrade path. It replaces the lock’s standard interior module and communicates with Z-Wave hubs like SmartThings, Ring, or Hubitat.

One trade-off: Z-Wave requires a compatible hub. If you don’t have one, consider the Wi-Fi version of the lock instead. The module itself does not create a direct Wi-Fi connection.

Before you start

Check that your Assure Lock 2 model is YRD450, YRD430, YRD420, or YRD410. The module is not compatible with earlier Assure locks or other brands.

Have your Z-Wave hub ready and within range. The module uses Z-Wave Plus, which offers better range and battery life than older Z-Wave versions, but a strong signal still matters.

Installation and pairing steps

  1. Remove the interior mounting plate: Open the battery cover and remove the batteries. Unscrew the two screws holding the interior mounting plate and lift it off. Set the original module aside. Keep the original module in a safe place in case you ever switch back to a non-smart lock.
  2. Install the Z-Wave Plus module: Align the new module’s connector with the port on the lock body and press firmly until it clicks. Replace the mounting plate and tighten the screws. Reinsert the batteries and close the cover. If the module does not click into place, check that the connector is oriented correctly—forcing it can damage the pins.
  3. Put the lock into pairing mode: Press and hold the reset/pairing button on the module (inside the battery compartment) for about 5 seconds until the LED blinks blue. This indicates the lock is ready to pair. If the LED does not blink, replace the batteries with fresh ones—low power can prevent pairing mode from activating.
  4. Add the lock to your Z-Wave hub: Open your hub’s app or web interface, select ‘Add Device’ or ‘Include’, and follow the prompts. The hub will search for the lock and confirm once paired. Name the lock (e.g., ‘Front Door’) and test it by locking and unlocking remotely. If the hub fails to find the lock, move the hub closer temporarily or remove any metal obstructions between them.
  5. Test and finalize: Use the hub’s app to lock and unlock the door. Then try the physical keypad to ensure local operation still works. If everything responds, the setup is complete. If the lock does not respond to the hub, exclude it from the network and repeat the inclusion process—sometimes the first attempt fails silently.
